Beware of cyclists/runners on backroads Saturday and Sunday morning

LURAY, Aug. 15 — Soon after the sun rises on Saturday morning, hundreds of triathletes will begin swarming around Lake Arrowhead to prepare for the 20th annual Luray Triathlon presented by RipIt Events.

Multiple events will take place in and around Lake Arrowhead simultaneously this weekend, with Olympic categories occurring on Saturday and Sprint events on Sunday. Most competitive activities will take place between 8 a.m. and noon each day. Motorists in the area should be on the alert for cyclists each day.

On Saturday, Aug. 16, the following lineup is planned:

  • Olympic Triathlon — 1500 Meter Swim | 25.4 Mile Bike | 6.2 Mile Run
  • Olympic Duathlon — 1.5 Mile Run | 25.4 Mile Bike | 6.2 Mile Run
  • Olympic Aquabike — 1500 Meter Swim | 25.5 Mile Bike
  • Olympic Triathlon RELAY — 1500 Meter Swim | 25.4 Mile Bike | 6.2 Mile Run
  • Olympic Duathlon RELAY — 1.5 Mile Run | 25.4 Mile Bike | 6.2 Mile Run

On Sunday, Aug. 17, the following lineup is planned:

  • Sprint Triathlon — 750 Meter Swim | 16.7 Mile Bike | 3.1 Mile Run
  • Sprint Duathlon — 1 Mile Run | 16.7 Mile Bike | 3.1 Mile Run
  • Sprint Aquabike — 750 Meter Swim |16.7 Mile Bike
  • Sprint Triathlon RELAY — 750 Meter Swim | 16.7 Mile Bike | 3.1 Mile Run
  • Sprint Duathlon RELAY — 1 Mile Run | 16.7 Mile Bike | 3.1 Mile Run

Swimming outside of the designated beach area during non-race days is not permitted. The swimming segment used a new start in 2024 that will continue this year, which has swimmers starting on land and then running into the water (as opposed to starting in the water). The 750-meter loop requires one lap during Sunday’s Sprint event, but two laps during Saturday’s Olympic competition.

Below is a map of the bike course:

The run course basically exits Lake Arrowhead and follows Valley Burg Road 1.5 miles to Brookstone Road and then loops back — one loop of 3.1 miles for Sprint, two loops of 6.2 miles for Olympic.

Online registration is now closed, but in-person registration is available on race weekend at athlete check-in. Participants of any event must be at least 14 years of age. Individual race swag includes a soft cotton t-short and finisher medal. Hawksbill Double race swag includes three cotton t-shorts and three finisher medals.

The Luray Triathlon is a partnership with the Town of Luray and Page County, Virginia. To scan local events for entertainment after the races visit, PageValley.org
