~ PVN staff report
LURAY — As high school fall sports now come to a close, Page Valley News finds itself once again circling back this year to talk about yet another district title for the junior varsity volleyball program at Luray High School. Although the achievement was reached on Halloween — and PVN rarely covers JV sports — the staff felt this was worthy of revisiting.
On Oct. 31, the Bulldogs defeated the Falcons of Central, 2-1, in a hard fought Bull Run District JV championship. Luray claimed the regular season title in junior varsity volleyball, while also winning the championship game in the postseason for the second-straight year.
Luray finished the season with an overall record of 18-3, while going 13-2 in the Bull Run District. Both district losses were on the road — 2-1 at Clarke on Oct. 2; and 2-0 at Madison on Sept. 17. The only other loss of the season was in the opener (again on the road), 2-1, to Stuarts Draft on Aug. 27.
In 21 matches, the junior varsity Bulldogs never lost at home all season and only went scoreless once. Luray held its opponent scoreless in nine of their 18 wins, and defeated non-district opponents Stuarts Draft, Buffalo Gap and East Rockingham.
On Oct. 26, 2023, the junior varsity volleyball program won its first-ever district championship over Clarke. An interesting twist to the back-to-back championships for Luray, is that the Bulldogs defeated Central this year, while playing at Clarke; and last season, they defeated Clarke, while playing at Central.
Hats off to JV Coach Jordan Cook on her two-year record of 38-4 and two district titles.
