Mark Monroe Johnson, 96, of Luray, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
He was born on May 25, 1928, in Orange County, Virginia, and was a son of the late Mark Pelton Johnson and Frances Eleanor Walters Johnson of Gordonsville.
Mark was a member of the St. Mark Lutheran Church in Luray.
On June 23, 1950, he married Christine Louise Campbell Johnson, who passed away on January 29, 2021.
Mark and Christine raised their family on North Court Street in a house he built, having lived there until his last day.
Mark was the founding Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 100 in Luray and was an adult leader in Scouting in Shenandoah Area Council for decades. Mark was active in the Luray Lions Club. He also served on the Luray Caverns Airport Board for many years.
Mark is survived by two younger sisters and a brother, Gerald (Jane) Johnson of Gordonsville, Ellen (Joseph) Skapars of Vienna, and Penny (Forrest) Breeden of Gordonsville. His older brother, the late Charles Johnson of Richmond, preceded him in death in 2024.
He is survived by four children, Mark William (Pamela) Johnson of Charlottesville, Kevin Monroe (Carolyn) Johnson of Stuarts Draft, Lisa Campbell Johnson of Luray, and Eric Nathan (Catharine) Johnson of Kearneysville, West Virginia; 11 grandchildren, Kirstin Johnson (Paul) Fritz, Mark A. “Drew” (Amanda) Johnson, Lydia Johnson (James) Grady, Samuel (Lindsay) Johnson, Jesse (Jasmine) Johnson, Noelle Johnson (Miguel) Faria, Daniel Vaught, Megan (Victor) Vaught, Rachel Louise (Colton) Miller, Ethan Johnson and Lily Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexander Fritz, Gideon Fritz, Gabriel Grady, Jonah Grady, Nora Grady, Levi Johnson, Ava Johnson and Eliana Arellano.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 7, at the Bradley Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, at the St. Mark Lutheran Church by the Rev. John Woodward. Burial will be in the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery in Luray.
