Warriors make state tournament, undefeated North District title, 12-game win streak
~ PVN staff report
LURAY — Mount Carmel Christian Academy (MCCA) hadn’t seen a girls basketball season this successful since 2020. What began as a rocky start with several early losses in November quickly turned around in December. At the start of the month, the Warriors found their stride, capturing several key district victories and building momentum that would define their season. The team went on an impressive 12-game winning streak.
The Warriors relied heavily on a high-intensity defensive approach, which propelled them to an undefeated North District Championship.
Despite being a young squad — comprised of five sophomores and three freshmen — the team earned a first-round bye in the regional tournament, a testament to their growth and consistency throughout the season.
On Friday, February 13, the Warriors faced Ridgeview in a hard-fought regional semifinal matchup that featured multiple lead changes. In a competitive battle that came down to the final moments, Ridgeview ultimately pulled away late to secure a six-point victory.
MCCA responded the following day. On Saturday, February 14, the Warriors took on Grace Christian in the regional third-place game. Showing resilience and determination, they earned a decisive 59–44 win to close out the weekend on a strong note.
Individually, Haelyn Morris and Darbi Hunsberger received top honors, as both were named to the Virginia Association of Christian Athletics (VACA) North Region First Team. Morris also earned additional recognition with a selection to the VACA North Region All-Tournament Team.
For the first time in six years, the Warriors advanced to the state tournament. Their postseason run concluded in the quarterfinals against Faith Christian in an intense matchup that ultimately ended in Faith’s favor.
The Warriors finished the season with a 16–7 record.
Darbi Hunsberger capped off the year by earning Second Team All-State honors.
