Meals tax

November 4, 1990 — For the second time in two years, Page County voters will vote Tuesday on a proposed meals tax. The board of supervisors is proposing a tax on food and beverages sold for human consumption by restaurants and on prepared food ready for consumption sold at delicatessen counters or grocery and convenience stores. The tax may not exceed 8.5 percent when added to the state and local general sales and use tax, according to state law. The current 4.5 percent sales tax means that the meals tax may not be greater than 4 percent. In 1988, the measure was defeated in Page County by some 62 percent.

  1. We already have to pay enough taxes to live in Page County. Plus having to put up with the stupid tourist. Completely against vineyards as that just creates more drunks on the highway. By the way your large sign that was put up on my property, without my consent needs to be removed. The address is Kathy L Blankenship, 4694 US Hwy 340 N, Luray Va. If anyone else gave permission to put the sign up, FYI no one owns this property but me. The sign needs to be removed.

  2. Your point is well taken….but this is from 35 years ago and listed as our “Today in History” feature. Taxes on meals have been levied by the county and all three towns for a while now. Hope you resolve the sign situation.
