Mixed feelings over meals tax

Luray-Cave Hill

August 6, 1991 — Some restaurant owners are taking a close-mouthed approach to a meals tax proposed by the Page County Board of Supervisors. It is estimated that the tax could generate $500,000 if imposed at its maximum 4 percent.

“I think the people in Page County have answered the board of supervisors when they voted it down two times before,” said Alan Chu, an owner of Brown’s Chinese and American Restaurant.

Cece Castle of Brookside Restaurant does not believe the meals tax will resolve the county’s financial woes. “I hope the public isn’t duped into thinking that all the money will go to the vo- tech center,” Mrs. Castle said. “I think the meals tax has been highlighted as a savior and I don’t think it is. I still think it will be necessary to raise real estate taxes.”
