Opposing opinions on Route 211 bypass

White House Bridge

August 23, 1965 — A hearing held here last Thursday by the Highway Department to get local opinion on a proposed U.S. 211 bypass for Luray failed to develop any concrete results except to point up differences in opinion as to the effect of such a bypass on local business.

Representatives of the Luray Caverns strongly supported the opinion that the bypass would benefit both the Caverns and town while others were just as insistent that a bypass would shunt potential business around the town and concentrate it at the Caverns where the bypass under present routing would terminate.

  1. There’s already a bypass north of business 211 downtown Luray now. This makes as much sense as the roundabout!
