LURAY, March 12 — It’s been a week full of winter sports accolades. All-state performers in both indoor track and wrestling. Yet, one athlete has stood out time and time again, providing crowd-erupting buzzer-beaters, being named the Region B Player of the Year, and he’s sure to gain some all-state accolades of his own in the coming days.

Luray junior Matthew Owens has lead Luray to one of its best seasons in boys basketball in many years. In his last three games, including a second-straight Region B championship and two state playoffs games, Owens lead all scorers in each contest and averaged 24 ppg (a total of 71 points).

He hit a last-second, three-pointer in the regular-season finale against Page County and another buzzer-beater to send the Bulldogs into overtime against Greensville County in a state quarterfinal. Luray advanced to the “Final Four” of the VHSL Class 2 state tournament and finished the season at 21-8.

Owens, a second team all-state honoree a year ago, is likely to get another mention on the all-state boys basketball squad when selections are announced.
