Local schools earn seven All-Region selections in basketball

STRASBURG, MARCH 3 — Two days after Luray High School captured its second-consecutive Region B championship in boys basketball on March 1, Strasburg Athletic Director Matt Hiserman released the All-Region selections naming Luray junior Matthew Owens the Region B Player of the Year. Local schools earned a total of seven spots on the All-Region teams.

Owens lead Luray to a 21-win season and lead all scorers in his last three games, averaging 24 ppg during that stretch in the postseason. Including the season finale, he recorded two buzzer-beaters that built momentum for the Bulldogs, who went deeper into the postseason that any Luray team has for many years.

A big part of Luray’s success can also be credited to senior Blake Jenkins, who also earned first team All-Region honors, and junior Connor Hilliard, a second team All-Region selection.

One of the few teams to beat the Bulldogs this season was the Panthers of Page County. Junior Caden Combs was one of the more dynamic players in the area and another first team All-Region honoree. Teammate and classmate Isaac Foltz earned second team honors.

In girls basketball, Page County junior Ali Purdham earned first team honors, while Luray freshman Caroline Donovan was a second team selection.

Clarke County junior Alainah McKavish was named the girls Player of the Year in Region B.
