Suspect pulled weapon on deputy after foot pursuit and ignored warnings

NAKED CREEK, March 31 — A Page County deputy reportedly gave “repeated commands to drop the firearm” before fatally shooting a wanted man who was armed in the Naked Creek area around midday on Tuesday.
The Page County Sheriff’s Office reported through social media Tuesday evening that the deputy “observed an individual who was wanted on a capias warrant” while responding to a call in the Naked Creek area near Shenandoah at approximately 11:20 a.m. The report does not state the nature of the original call to the area.
“When the officer exited the vehicle, a foot pursuit ensued,” the PCSO report states. “Based on the review of body-worn camera footage, the individual brandish[ed] a firearm at the officer. After repeated commands to drop the firearm were unsuccessful, the officer discharged his service weapon.”
Emergency personnel responded and the individual was pronounced dead at the scene, the report continues. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
“In accordance with policy, the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation,” the report states.
Due to the nature of the active and ongoing investigation being handled by the Criminal Bureau of Investigations Division of the Virginia State Police, no further information is being released at this time.
Naked Creek sits along Page County’s southern border with Rockingham County, about a mile south of the Town of Shenandoah and about four miles north of Elkton. In its initial alert to the community around midday, the sheriff’s office noted “heavy law enforcement presence in the Jollett Road and Grindstone Mountain View Road areas in Naked Creek.”
The same initial notice stated that “the situation has been deescalated, and there is no immediate threat to the community.” Residents outside of that community were asked to avoid the area “to allow emergency personnel to safely manage the scene.”
“The Page County Sheriff’s Office extends its appreciation to the responding personnel,” the secondary report concludes, “and asks the public to keep everyone affected by this incident in their thoughts.”
