Best season in young program’s history and still not fielding full lineup

SHENANDOAH, Jan. 17 — They’ve suffered from injuries and a depleted roster that results in a dozen points (or more) being forfeited during most matches, but still, the Page County High School wrestling team keeps winning. On Friday night, the Panthers honored their seniors and won a dual match against Class 3 East Rockingham, 42-40.
“I’m so proud of how this team is performing. We give up 12 points because of forfeits, and still find a way to get the win,” PCHS wrestling coach Greg Martin said. “To be 9-1 on the season, and we don’t have a full lineup, and to give everyone 12 points right away… that’s impressive to say the least.”
Friday night was Senior Night for the Panthers, and they honored their four seniors — Mason Bennett (138 lbs), Kaylee Campbell (106 lbs), Jordan Hedrick (190 lbs), and Mackenzie Painter (235 lbs).
The dual match with East Rock “was a tight dual all the way,” according to Coach Martin. The two-point victory marked the ninth team win this season for Page County, who’s 9-1 mark is the best in the young program’s history.
Two days earlier, the Panthers traveled to Clarke County for a Bull Run District quad match on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Page County defeated Stonewall Jackson (46-34), Madison County (54-30) and Rappahannock County (70-0). During that match, eight different Panthers went undefeated at 3-0, including Kaylee Campbell (106 lbs), Kayla Pence (126 lbs), Jonny Mora-Ceron (132 lbs), Mason Bennett (138 lbs), Michael Shifflett (144 lbs), Logan Richards (150 lbs), Jordan Hedrick (175 lbs), and George Thomas (190 lbs).
Brandon Sponaugle (190 lbs) went 1-0, while Cameron Deneal (120 lbs) and Maddie Wolfe (215 lbs) went 2-1.
Up next, Page County (9-1) travels to Madison County on Wednesday, Jan. 22 for a Bull Run District meet, where they will face three-time defending Class 2 state champs Strasburg in the first match, the Falcons of Central in the second match, and close out the night against the Eagles of Clarke County.
