We acknowledge the great run of the LHS boys basketball team, but they made the state tournament last year and we recently recognized their Region B Player of the Year. We also acknowledge the great performance of many local track athletes at the indoor state championships — including an inaugural season by the PCHS boys team — but arguably, many of those athletes were already competing and winning in spring track and cross country.
However, the Page County wrestling program had its best season ever. The Panthers went 5-1 in the Bull Run District this season, good enough for second place, and recorded a 15-2 overall record — the best in program history. Page placed six grapplers among the Top 4 in the region, and sent two wrestlers to the state tournament. They also sent three girls to the VHSL Girls State Wrestling Tournament.
Page County High School junior Michael Shifflett took the podium and earned All-State honors after finishing in fifth place at the VHSL Class 2 state wrestling tournament held on Saturday, March 1 at Virginia High School in Bristol. Shifflett made his second-straight appearance in the state tournament, going 4-2 in the 144-pound weight class and lost his last match to the defending state champion from Poquoson. He was 32-5 this season.
PCHS senior Jordan Hedrick made his fourth-straight appearance at the state wrestling tournament. Hedrick went 2-2 at state in the 175-pound weight class and ended a four-year record at Page with an overall record of 81-28. During his senior season, he was 22-5.
In late February, two members of the Page County High School girls wrestling team earned all-state honors after finishing among the top six in their weight class at the VHSL Girls State Wrestling Tournament held at the Henrico Sports Complex.
Mackenzie Painter went 5-1 in the state tournament at the 235lb weight class to earn third place. This is the third-straight year that Painter has earned all-state honors at this tournament.
Kaylee Campbell would take sixth place at the 107lb weight class.
The Page County wrestling program has been around for several years, but it is still a relatively new program compared to other traditional sports. This season, the Panthers proved they could compete at a high level and were alongside Strasburg, among the top teams in the region.
