O’Neill provides game-winning PK with three minutes left

SHENANDOAH, April 8 — Page County’s boys soccer team captured its first Bull Run District win of the season on Tuesday, with a 1-0 victory over perennial powerhouse Clarke County. Senior Sam O’Neill provided the game-winning PK with three minutes left in overtime at Buddy Comer Stadium.

“Overall we played very good team ball across the board,” PCHS head coach Tyler Knight said. “We left some goals on the field with missed opportunities or unfortunate bounces off the post, but every position tonight contributed in everything we did. From our keeper making great saves, our back line protecting everything at all cost, our mid-field controlling and seeing our options and our forwards putting shots on target that unfortunately wouldn’t fall tonight.”

The Panthers are now 2-1-1 on the season. Their only other district action came on April 2 in Woodstock, when they reached a 1-1 impasse with the Falcons of Central. Page opened the season on March 18 with a 2-1 non-district win at home over East Rockingham. The only loss of the season came at the hands of Rockbridge County, 3-1, on March 25.

Tuesday’s win over Clarke (1-1, 3-4) and the tie with Central (1-1, 2-2-1) leaves second-place Page County as one of only two teams in the Bull Run without a district loss. Stonewall Jackson is currently 2-0 in the Bull Run, and 3-0 overall on the season.

“I wanted to say ‘thank you’ to the coaching staff, players and parents for their support, dedication and time spent both during the off-season and in season,” Coach Parker said earlier this week. “Hard work, determination, drive and desire all factored into tonight’s win!”

Next up, the Panthers (1-0, 2-1-1) travel to Madison County (0-1, 0-3) for a 5:30 p.m. match on Friday, April 11.

“I’m very proud of the guys, they’re all very excited…but we’re not done yet,” Coach Parker added. “Madison County is Friday and that’s our next focus.”
