SHENANDOAH, April 2 — In a chilly Bull Run District opener, Page County hung with a stout Central squad until the Falcons added to a narrow lead in the fifth and then tacked on five runs in the seventh. The Panthers could only muster two hits on Wednesday, while Central belted 11 and captured its second district win on the road, 10-1.
Central’s Isaac Barb went a complete seven innings on the hill in picking up the win. The senior right-hander only allowed one earned run off two hits, and struck out nine while walking five. Junior Noah Moss had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three singles and an RBI.
Page County’s Tyler Shifflett held Central to only two runs heading into the fifth. Also a senior right-hander, Shifflett recorded seven strikeouts in four innings. However, he would hit a batter in the fifth with the bases loaded to give Central an unearned run and a 3-1 lead. Junior John Leake Jr. would take the hill in relief. The Falcons tacked on two more runs in the inning off a Panther error.
Page County had gotten on the board first thanks to an RBI-single by Shifflett in his first at-bat. Central overtook that 1-0 lead in the third off an RBI-triple from junior Austin Hosaflook and an RBI-single by Moss. The Falcons’ 2-1 lead held until the fifth, when they added three more and lead 5-1 heading into the seventh.
In their final at-bat, the Falcons recorded five runs off four hits and two Page errors. Even though Central claimed a 10-1 victory, the Falcons still left 14 runners on base. Central left the bases loaded in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and left two on in the second and seventh.
Hosaflook finished the day going 2-for-5 with a single, a triple and an RBI. Junior James Bilbow went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and an RBI. He also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch.
Page’s Caden Combs went 1-for-1 after drawing two walks and laying down a beautiful bunt single. While Combs scored the Panthers’ only run, Shifflet got the only other hit and the only RBI. Page County committed four errors during the game and left three on base.
Next up, the Panthers (1-5) travel to Clarke County to face the Eagles at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8.
The Falcons beat Clarke, 11-2, in their season opener on March 28. Central (3-3) will now travel to Madison for a 6:30 p.m. start on Tuesday.
