Bull Run District opener for both teams

QUICKSBURG, Sept. 9 — The Page County Panthers picked up their first win of the season in volleyball on Tuesday night at Stonewall Jackson High School in three straight sets. The Panthers dominated two of the three sets in the Bull Run District opener for both teams.

Senior Addyson Wyant lead Page County with six kills, an ace and a block. Sophomore Lexi Swisher posted four aces, while sophomore Caelyn Lucas had two kills and sophomore Addison Kelly had two aces. Both junior Lindsay Babb and sophomore Kierston Foster both recorded a kill and an ace.

Sophomore Maggie Miller and freshman Olivia Hulver lead the Generals with three kills and three aces each, while junior McKenzie Woods had four aces and two kills. Senior Kiona Kelley had three aces and a kill, while sophomore Dani Pieratt had two kills and two blocks.

The Panthers jumped out to a 12-1 lead in the opening set and extended that lead to 22-5 before the Generals fought back to close the gap. Page went on to a 25-15 win. Page again jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the second set and went on to win 25-17. While the Panthers easily won both sets, Page’s double-digit lead through most of the first set narrowed to single digits throughout the second set.

The third and final set narrowed the gap between the two teams even more, featuring three lead changes and five ties. After an early 2-0 Stonewall lead, Page went on an 5-0 run and quickly took over the lead. Both teams would exchange runs and tie the set up at 5-5 and 10-10.

The Generals then went on its most impressive run of the match, going 10-3 behind three straight aces from Hulver and a couple of kills by Miller. However, Page County answered right back with its own 12-2 run, tying the set back up at 22-22. The run featured two aces by Foster and kills by four different Panthers. The set would knot up again at 24-24 before Page benefitted from two Stonewall errors and claimed the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-0.

Head coach Kaitlyn Kibler and the Panthers were 1-5 heading into a district match with Clarke on Thursday night. All five Page losses were non-district losses. Page travels to Central of Woodstock on Tuesday before hosting cross-county rival Luray next Thursday, Sept. 18 at 7:15 p.m.

Stonewall Jackson (0-4) was scheduled to travel to Rappahannock on Thursday night. The Generals host Riverheads on Tuesday before traveling to Strasburg next Thursday. The team has yet to win a single set this season.
