WOODSTOCK, Feb. 10 — Page County competed in the Region 2B wrestling tournament at Central High School on Monday, and two Panthers qualified for the VHSL Class 2 state wrestling tournament Feb. 21-22 in Salem.

After finishing as Region 2B runner-up on Monday, senior Jordan Hedrick will be making his fourth-straight appearance in the VHSL state wrestling tournament next weekend. He’s competing at 175 pounds and has a record of 20-3 on the season.

Junior Michael Shifflett also finished as Region 2B runner-up this week and will be making a return trip to the state tournament after qualifying last season. He competes at 144 pounds and has a season record of 28-3. Two of his losses this season came at the hands of Peyton Dean from Strasburg.

The Panthers had four more wrestlers that finished fourth at region — just one win away from making the state tournament — including senior Kaylee Campbell, junior Cameron Deneal, sophomore Kayla Pence and senior Mason Bennett.

Page County went 5-1 in the Bull Run District this season, good enough for second place. However, the Panthers have recorded a 15-2 overall record — the best in program history — placed six grapplers among the Top 4 in the region, and are now sending two wrestlers to the state tournament.

Coach Greg Martin says the “future looks bright for the Panther grapplers.”

In a recent quad match at Randolp-Macon Military Academy at the end of the season, Page County won three straight head-to-head matches by a combined score of 208-12:

Their only loss at a recent district match at Madison was to two-time defending state champion Strasburg.

“It was a solid effort from every wrestler,” Coach Martin said. “I get so excited watching this team wrestle, they get better and better evert time they  step on the mat. It’s been alot of fun this year, watching this team grow.”
