Page falls 3-1 to Generals at home on Tuesday
By Randy Arrington
SHENANDOAH, Sept. 10 — After dropping six straight non-district matches, the Page County Panthers continue to search for their first volleyball win of the 2024 season, as they dropped their Bull Run District opener Tuesday night, 3-1, to visiting Stonewall Jackson.
The Generals were also searching for their first win as well and jumped out to a 13-1 advantage in the first set. Page would only be able to narrow the gap to a seven-point deficit at 20-13. Stonewall held a double-digit lead most of the way and closed out a 25-15 win. Senior McKenzie Stanley had back-to-back kills during the set for Stonewall and proved to be a strong presence at the net all night. Page got multiple aces served up by junior Addyson Wyant in the first set.
The second set started with a 4-0 advantage for the Panthers, but Stonewall scored four straight points to tie it up. The scoring then went back-and-forth and tied up five more times en route to a 9-9 deadlock. The Generals then rattled off six straight scores to take a 15-9 advantage, before the Panthers clawed their way back to a tie at 20-20 and 21-21. The Generals would score four of the last five points to claim the set 25-22 and take an 2-0 advantage in the match. Senior Virginia Blank showed her spiking abilities for Stonewall in the second set. Page was able to stay close due to a few aces by sophomore Adi Caton and a few kills recorded by sophomore Ava Marshall.
Page County found a win in the third set, but they had to fight for it. Sophomore Carmen Umberger had back-to-back kills that helped the Panthers get out to a 6-2 lead. After Stonewall tied things up at 6-6, Page went on another run to make it 14-6. The Panthers would stay just ahead, although the Generals closed the gap to one at 20-19. Page finished off the set with a 25-23 win — it was only the third set the Panthers have won through seven matches this season.
The fourth and final set was tied seven times en route to a 9-9 dead heat. Wyant served up three consecutive aces for Page during that stretch. At that point, Stonewall began to pull away under the senior leadership of McKenzie Stanley, Blank and Maison Stanley. The Generals feature seven seniors on a 14-player roster and closed out the last set with a 25-17 win to take the match, 3-1.
Next up, Page County (0-7) will travel to Clarke County (3-2) on Thursday night for another Bull Run District matchup at 7:15 p.m. The Eagles have won district matches over Rapp and Central, while suffering their two losses to larger Frederick County schools, Sherando and John Handley.
Stonewall Jackson (1-3) will host Rappahannock (2-4) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
