SHENANDOAH, Sept. 19  — It’s been a good year for Page County High School’s Braxton Pettit. Following a fourth-place finish at the indoor track state championships in March, the then-sophomore became a state runner-up at the outdoor track and field state championships in June. Now, this fall on the gridiron, the junior running back has rushed for 326 yards in the last two weeks, including a 203-yard performance against Harrisonburg on Friday night for homecoming.

Pettit posted 123 yards against East Rockingham a week ago and recorded 203 yards on 19 carries (10.7 ypc) and three touchdowns against Harrisonburg. The track star especially showed his speed when he broke loose around the end for touchdown runs of 44, 30 and 36 yards on Friday night. He accounted for nearly half of Page County’s 430 yards of offense in a 44-20 homecoming victory.

As he finished up his sophomore year, Pettit posted the highest placement of any local athlete at the VHSL Class 2 Outdoor Track State Championships held June 6-7 at James Madison University. He was the state runner-up in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.74 seconds — just one-tenth of a second behind the state champion. He won both the Bull Run District (14.68) and the Region 2B title (14.76) in the event. He also finished 13th at state among 26 finalists in the 300 meter hurdles (42.42 seconds) and 15th among 35 finalist in the 100 meter dash (11.4 seconds).

In early March at the VHSL Class 2 Indoor State Championships held at Liberty University, Pettit finished fourth in the 55 meter hurdles (8.11 seconds), finishing just 0.46 behind the state champion from Bruton. He missed the finals for the 55 meter dash by less than three-tenths of a second.

Getting back to the gridiron this Friday night, the Panthers (1-3) have a chance to record back-to-back wins as they begin their Bull Run District schedule by hosting the Generals of Stonewall Jackson (0-4) at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26 at Buddy Comer Stadium.
