Pettit leading Panthers with state-qualifying performance

Hensley, Davis also qualified for the state indoor track meet

ROANOKE, Dec. 20 — A couple of meets into the winter indoor track season, and a trio of Panthers have already qualified for the VHSL Class 2 state indoor track meet March 4-5 at Liberty University.

Among a field of 26 competitors, PCHS junior Braxton Pettit won the 55-meter hurdlers at the ECE Roanoke – Winter Wonderland Holiday Hat on Dec. 20 in just 7.6 seconds. One week earlier at the Liberty Christmas High School Invitational, Pettit took second place in the same event among 58 competitors with the same time of 7.6 seconds. The junior recorded a 7.52 in prelims — the second-fastest time in the state.

During the indoor track meet at Liberty on Dec. 13 — featuring more than 2,200 athletes from all classifications — Pettit not only qualified for the state indoor meet in the 55-meter hurdles, but the junior also qualified for state in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.84 (50th among 318 entries) and set a personal best time of 38.73 seconds in the 300-meter dash. He also finished ninth in the long jump among 70 competitors at 18 feet, 8.75 inches.

At Roanoke, Pettit also finished 18th among 46 long jumpers with a distance of 5.43 meters, and 36th among 158 runners in the 300 meters with a time of 39.63.

PCHS senior Aaron Hensley qualified for the state indoor track meet with a time of 4:41 in the 1600 meters (29th among 201 runners) and a time of 2:43 in the 1000 meters (27th among 185) during the Dec. 13 meet at Liberty. Last Saturday at Roanoke, Hensley finished 13th among 46 runners in the 1600 meters with a time of 4.49.52. Page County’s Isaac Davis finished ninth in the high jump and also surpassed the state qualifying mark.

Other notable performances at the highly competitive indoor track meet at Liberty on Dec. 13, include Page County’s Nate Holloway, who finished in sixth place (among 97 competitors) in the shot put with a distance of 44 feet, 7.25 inches — a new personal record.

Other notable performances at the Roanoke indoor meet last weekend, include Luray’s Azmani Jackson, who won the boys 500 meters in 1:08.49. Jackson finished 23rd in the 55-meter dash among 190 competitors with a time of 6.93 seconds.

Also finishing well in Roanoke on Dec. 20 was:

  • 5th — Lucy Currle, LHS, 55 meters, 9.37 sec.
  • 6th — Aaron Hensley, Asher Kite, Jaxon Staples, Hudson Cave, PCHS boys, 4×800 relay, 9:42.12
  • 6th — 4×800 relay, LHS girls, 12:08.7
  • 12th — Asher Kite, PCHS, 1000 meters, 2:52.13
  • 14th — Kristina McLain, LHS, 55 meters, 10.16 sec.
  • 14th — Daniel Frey, LHS, 55-meter hurdles, 9.51 sec .
  • 15th — Maya Jenkins, LHS, 1000 meters, 3:32.01
  • 16th — Daniel Frey, LHS, 500 meters, 1:16.3
