August 23, 1986 — Three people escaped with injuries Saturday when their small plane crashed east of Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park. “They were very lucky people,” Park dispatcher Harold Skinner said of the two men and one woman aboard the plane which crashed about 2 p.m. in southwestern Madison County. The wreckage was found by rangers after a hiker reported seeing smoke just below Big Meadows about one mile north of Hazletop Summit, Skinner said. The plane’s three occupants were taken to the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
