Police chief suffers heart attack

October 19, 1961 — Stanley’s Police Chief Weldon W. Painter, 51, died suddenly of a heart attack at eight o’clock Sunday evening, Oct. 15. Mr. Painter was stricken in the Page County Sheriff ’s Office after bringing in a prisoner and succumbed instantly. Last rites were conducted Wednesday. Mr. Painter had served as Stanley’s Police Chief for a number of years and had a commendable record as a police officer. He was well-liked in the community and his sudden death has brought sorrow to many.
