Poultry expansion

The former poultry processing plant became a metal recycling center in 2008.

September 24, 1990 — The Page County Board of Zoning Appeals approved a variance request Monday for Rockingham Poultry’s Alma plant. The variance will allow a 36-by-235- foot addition to the plant. According to Tom Mallileau, plant manager, the addition will mean a minimum of 100 new jobs. There are about 145 employees at the facility.

“The addition will help us to double shift our production, update our equipment, and provide a new employee break room and cafeteria,” Mallileau said Monday.

The production area will include a chiller — a steel tank in which chickens are placed to get the temperature below 40 degrees so that no bacteria will grow, the plant manager noted.

The zoning appeals board granted the variance but said that no employee access will be allowed from the side of the structure that faces U.S. 340. They also recommended that the addition be properly landscaped.
