19,000 chickens were scheduled for delivery later that day

STANLEY, Oct. 22 — Fire Chief Terry A. Pettit reported that the Stanley Fire Department responded to a poultry house fire Tuesday morning at 2:40 a.m. on the Silver Creek Farm at 294 Dovel Hollow Road about five miles southwest of Stanley. Chief Pettit stated that the poultry house was fully ablaze when firefighters arrived.

The poultry house owed by Leroy Cubbage of Stanley was being prepared for 19,000 organic chickens to be placed in the building on Tuesday. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and still under investigation.

Chief Pettit estimates the 70′-by-300′ poultry house was a total loss and estimated damage stands at $600,000. Cubbage did have some insurance on the building, according to Pettit.

Five Stanley units and 21 firefighters responded to the blaze. It took an hour to bring the fire under control, and firefighters remained on the scene for three hours to make sure the fire was contained to the building.

The department was assisted by tankers from the Luray and Shenandoah Fire Departments, and the Luray Fire Department also covered the Stanley station with an engine for other calls. Page County EMS responded to the call, but no injuries were reported. The Page County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with traffic control.
