May 24, 1962 — A broken bottled gas line feeding a cooking range caused a small fire at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Cave, near SNP headquarters Thursday afternoon of last week.
As Mrs. Cave was using the range the gas line broke off and ignited, throwing a flame like a blowtorch. She quickly called her husband, who works at Panorama, and the Luray Fire Department.
Mr. Cave arrived first with a dry-chemical fire extinguisher and smothered the fire with it. When Luray firemen arrived on the scene the fire was out.
There was very little damage reported except to the range itself. Smoke and the chemicals used in extinguishing the flame caused slight damage to the home and furnishings.
