August 10, 1991 — A lot of people have enjoyed the splendor of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River from a canoe. But few have experienced the river the way 14 Boy Scouts did last week. Scouts from Troop 242 of Newport News, along with six adult leaders — mostly parents — tackled 58 miles of the South Fork, winding their way from Shenandoah to Front Royal over seven days. They spent last Monday night on Gander’s Island, owned by Edward Gander, near the Wooden Lamb. The challenge, location and history of the South Fork were the main drawing cards.
