‘Seldom has such a large quantity of moonshine whiskey been taken in the Shenandoah Valley’

March 16, 1964 — A $2,000 fine and a five-year suspended sentence was meted out to a Shenandoah poultryman, by Judge Thomas J. Michie in U.S. District Court in Harrisonburg Monday of this week.

The man had pleaded guilty to the operation of an unlicensed distillery and the possession of untaxed liquor. The raid on his operations was staged Jan. 18. He will be permitted to pay the fine at the rate of $25 per month and remains on probation for five years.

The still, which was located on the second floor of a poultry house in Steam Hollow, near Shenandoah, was described by agents as one of the largest and most efficient operations they had seen in years.

Seized were 270 gallons of the finished product in kegs, glass jars and bottles. Officers stated seldom has such a large quantity of moonshine whiskey been taken in the Shenandoah Valley, even during the prohibition era.
