SHENANDOAH — The Shenandoah Recreation League hosted the Virginia Babe Ruth 10U state softball tournament July 3-6 at Veterans Memorial Fields. The local all stars fought hard into extra innings of the state championship game to come out on top of the seven-team field.
Shenandoah’s 10U softball all stars went into the championship round on Sunday, July 6 undefeated. The locals knocked off the visiting competition by a combined score of 46-5 over the first three games.
However, it would take two one-run games against New Kent before Shenandoah would be crowned state champion. The first game at 11:30 a.m. would end with Shenandoah’s first loss, 6-5. That forced a second game on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. between Shenandoah and New Kent to determine the state title. That championship bout was one of the best games of the weekend, going into extra innings and capped off by a walk-off single that clenched the Virginia Babe Ruth 10U softball state title for host Shenandoah, 12-11.
Nataleigh Austin earned Most Valuable Player honors during the 2025 state tournament.
“It was such a great experience, and I am so proud of the girls,” Manager Chris Painter said. “They have worked so hard these past few weeks practicing and the week of the tournament, and it paid off!”
“Words can’t explain the amount of fight in these girls. It truly was a team effort. All 12 of these girls had an impact on the outcome of the game,” Painter continued. “A lot of these girls have finished as runner-ups and in third place, so that win felt even better!”
“I am thankful for such a great group of girls, coaches, and parents to have this experience with. A huge shoutout to all the men and women of the Shenandoah Rec league for all their hard work in making this tournament run so well. It’s something I will never forget.”
