8U all-stars go 4-2 in state tournament; tough losses to Manassas Blue
~ Submitted by Shenandoah Recreation League
SHENANDOAH — The Shenandoah Recreation League hosted the Virginia Babe Ruth 8U state softball tournament July 3-6 at Veterans Memorial Fields. The local all-stars fought hard to reach the state championship game, but suffered their second loss of the tournament to the only opponent to beat them in the nine-team field.
“I couldn’t be prouder of this incredible group of girls. Our Shenandoah 8U All-Stars fought with everything they had and earned the title of Babe Ruth Softball state runner-ups!” Coach Nick Clements said. “These young athletes showed heart, determination, and resilience every single day of the tournament. No matter what challenges came their way, they battled hard in every game and never gave up.”
On the first day of the state tournament, Shenandoah’s 8U all-stars won two games, defeating New Kent, 9-2, during a 9 a.m. contest, and Peachtree, 14-4, that evening at 7 p.m. On July 4th, the host team beat Rockville, 24-8. They would go into Day 3 with a perfect 3-0 record, having outscored their opponents, 47-14.
The next day Shenandoah suffered its first loss to Manassas Blue, 13-2. The final day of the state tournament saw Shenandoah play back-to-back games before lunch — defeating Glen Allen, 18-9, at 9 a.m., before turning around to face Manassas Blue a second time at 11 a.m. The visitors won the state championship, 17-5.
Shenandoah finished the tournament as the Virginia Babe Ruth 8U Softball state runner-up, with a record of 4-2. For many of the local players, it was their first all-star tournament.
“This team has come so far this year. The growth I’ve seen — not just in skills, but in their teamwork, confidence and love for the game — has been amazing to watch. They’ve worked so hard, supported each other, and played with pride and purpose every step of the way,” Coach Nick Clements said.
“Girls, thank you for giving it your all. You’ve made your coaches, families, and community incredibly proud,” Coach Clements continued. “Way to go girls, you’ve truly earned this honor! This is only the beginning!”
