Virginia champs play eight games in nine days over two tournaments

NOKESVILLE, June 30 — The Shenandoah Recreation League’s 12 Major/60 all stars won the Virginia state championship after going undefeated in the Bath Ruth state tournament in Nokesville. The Shenandoah team won all five games, including a 6-0 victory over Brentsville in the state championship. Their performance earned them a spot in another tournament in Herndon, where they captured the sportsmanship award.

The 12 Major/60 boys from Shenandoah went 4-0 in pool play during the state tournament from Thursday, June 27 through Saturday, June 29. Then on Sunday, June 30, as the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Shenandoah shut out Brentsville in the title game.

Shenandoah’s Julian “Jules” Painter earned the Most Valuable Player award during the state tournament. The young ace pitched a complete game shutout in the championship game, with 12 strikeouts and no walks. He completed the six-inning victory in only 72 pitches.

After winning the state championship, the Shenandoah 12 Major/60 all stars earned a spot in the 50/70 state tournament. The local all stars “had one practice to make adjustments, and then head to Herndon to start again,” according to a social media post by the Shenandoah Rec League.

Shenandoah played its final game in that tournament on Saturday, July 6, with a 4-1 win over Staunton. It proved to be their only win in that tournament; however, the 12 Major/60 all stars played eight games in nine days, with a final record of 6-2 — and a state championship.

Despite their 1-2 mark in the second tournament, the Shenandoah team left an impression on their peers by winning the 2024 Major/70 Don Rose Memorial Sportsmanship Award.

“As the team was packing up, the announcer was talking about sportsmanship and how important it is in the game of baseball. They also stated how well Shenandoah displayed sportsmanship throughout the tournament,” the League’s social media post states.

“We can’t express how proud we are of these boys and coaches! You represented us well.”
