Bennett finishes fourth
~ PVN staff report
BRIDGEWATER, Dec. 20 — Page County High School junior Michael Shifflett captured the gold medal in the 144-pound weight class at the Turner Ashby Holiday Invitational Wrestling Tournament Dec. 20-21. Shifflett went 5-0 over the two-day tournament.
Senior Mason Bennett also took the podium after going 3-3 on the day and earning a fourth-place finish in the 138-pound class.
The Panthers were missing five wrestlers in the lineup “due to injuries and other reasons,” according to head coach Greg Martin, “but that didn’t stop the Panthers from making noise and scoring alot of team points.”
Three other Panthers recorded at least one win among their three matches, including Kayla Pence (1-2 at 126 pounds), Logan Richards (1-2 at 150 pounds), and George Thomas (1-2 at 215 pounds).
The TA tournament included 20 teams from all around the state, and according to Coach Martin, “the competition was like being at the state wrestling tournament.”
“I thought the team wrestled well, and the new wrestlers are getting better,” Coach Martin said. “It was a tough tournament, and to see Michael Shifflett win his weight class, and he beat some studs to win it, and I was really glad to see Mason Bennett get on a roll and get on the podium.”
The Panthers return to action this Saturday, Jan 4., when they travel to Alleghany to participant in the Alleghany Duals.
