Slave block

Luray museum

September 2, 1961 — This native sandstone block which measures 17×20-1/2 inches in section and some 58 inches high, stood at the corner of Main and Court streets at the Chamber of Commerce building for 50 or more years in the 19th Century. It was used as a perch for slaves about to be sold at auction. Removed when Main Street was widened, it was found by Mayor Dyche in the rear of the building at this location. The mayor has reclaimed the stone and the town has remounted it on a concrete foundation in the Inn Park as a historical relic. A brass plaque explaining its history will be put on the face.
