August 17, 1889 — One day last week Messrs. Wm. H. Row, Daniel and William Mussellman and Hubert Finter, accompanied by several ladies, were on the Blue Ridge picking whortleberries when they came upon a nest of three rattlesnake, all very large.
The party, assisted by a dog, attacked the snakes, but before they were despatched the dog was bitten twice, from which he died immediately. The snakes were as large as any ever seen in this community, and one of them had 14 rattles, which, it is said, indicated that he was 15 years old.
