Shenk shutting doors after five years in business
By Randy Arrington
LURAY, March 28 — A little over four months into the COVID-19 pandemic, Lynette Shenk purchased the Valley Cork in Downtown Luray. After only 18 months in business, Chris and Lindi Jenkins sold the popular eatery following a two-month shutdown under pandemic mandates. Now, after five years in business, Shenk announced on Friday that she’ll be serving her last customers on Saturday, April 26.
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of The Valley Cork. After five incredible years, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors,” reads a March 28 announcement on Valley Cork’s Facebook page.
“This journey has been nothing short of amazing,” the Facebook post continues. “We’ve had the privilege of sharing good wine, delicious food, and unforgettable moments with all of you.”
The Jenkins first opened The Valley Cork on Dec. 6, 2018, before closing in May 2020. Shenk purchased the business that July and reopened its doors in August 2020. At that time, Shenk was not new to the food industry — she and her husband David operated Little Cabin BBQ and had been catering events all across the region since 2007. When she lost David after 23 years of marriage in December of 2019, she turned to The Valley Cork as a new project.
“I just needed something to do with my time,” she told PVN during a 2020 interview.
The last five years have provided something to do with her time — creating new memories and new friends.
“From celebrations to casual gatherings, special events to community connections, The Valley Cork has been more than just a restaurant — it has been a place where friendships flourished and memories were made,” the March 28 announcement states. “Some of our favorite memories have been the nights filled with laughter and friendly competition during Trivia and Music Bingo with TopShelf Trivia. Seeing our space come alive with energy, camaraderie, and excitement has been truly special.”
The announcement goes on to thank both customers and staff from past and present for their support over the last five years.
“While this chapter is coming to a close, the memories will remain forever,” the announcement continues. “But this isn’t goodbye! Our Grazing Tables and Charcuterie Boxes will still be available at Fairview Grocery, so you can continue to enjoy the flavors you love.”
The Valley Cork also intends to offer “special discounts on bottles of wine” during the month of April.
“We hope you’ll join us in the coming weeks for a final toast and one last meal as we celebrate the wonderful years we’ve had together,” the Facebook post states.
