January 28, 1987 — Three Shenandoah firefighters suffered injuries early Monday morning while battling a structure fire which severely damaged a residence on U.S. 340. The residence was owned by Lynn Jenkins, according to Shenandoah Fire Chief “Beany” Jarrells.
The fire, caused by a defective flue, broke out around 3:15 a.m., Jarrells said. The blaze ripped through the top floor of the house, severely damaging six rooms. The house was “probably totaled,” Jarrells said.
Jenkins’ 12-year-old daughter, whom Jarrells could not identify, was awakened by a smoke alarm, woke up the other five occupants of the house and helped them to safety.
“I think she’s done a tremendous job,” Jarrells said.
The three firefighters, whom Jarrells would not identify, were injured when ceilings caved in. One suffered a mild concussion, another sustained bruised ribs and the third a bruised ankle. Jarrells said two of the firemen were from Company 70 and the third was from Company 30.
