Page County finishes seventh among host of 3A, 4A schools

HARRISONBURG, DEC. 14 — The Page County High School wrestling team opened up their 2024-25 campaign on Saturday by finishing seventh among a strong field of 3A and 4A schools in the Harrisonburg High School Wrestling Invitational.

Despite being down two starters, the Panthers fell less than 10 points away from a Top 5 finish and had three wrestlers medal among the top three in their weight class. Cameron Deneal went 4-1 on the day and captured third place at 120 pounds; Michael Shifflett won third place with a 4-1 mark at 144 pounds; and Jordan Hedrick took second place at 190 pounds after going 2-1.

“I was very proud of their performance… Cameron Deneal and Michael Shifflett battled hard through the consolation bracket to finish with third place medals… I’ve always said that taking third is the hardest medal to win, because you’ve got to win a lot more matches to get there,” PCHS wrestling coach Greg Martin said. “Jordan Hedrick made quick work of his first two opponents, pinning them both in the first period to advance him to the finals, where he would lose tough matches to Rockbridge High School, earning him second place.”

Other notable performances included a 2-2 mark by Kayla Pence at 126 pounds and Logan Richards at 150 pounds.

“I thought senior Kaylee Campbell, did good (1-2 at 106 pounds)… she lost two tough ones,” Coach Martin said. “Kayla Pence and Logan Richards wrestled their tails off, both coming one win away from getting on the medal stand.”

“I was really satisfied with the first-year wrestlers and how they held their own, and wrestled tough, they just just need more mat time, and they will get there,” Coach Martin added.

Next up, the Panthers travel to the Turner Ashby High School Wrestling Invitational Friday and Saturday, Dec 20-21.
