THORTON GAP, Oct. 2 — The Luray Volunteer Fire Department received a call about a trash truck on fire on Route 211 East near Thorton Gap around 9 p.m. on Thursday night.
The fire department reported that “upon arrival, a trash truck owned by Updike Industries was found to be heavily engulfed in fire. The truck was about [one-third] full of trash. Firefighters had to cut through the metal trash box to suppress residual flames inside.”

The fire did not spread into adjacent Shenandoah National Park as earlier reported, according to Luray firefighter Tim Lansberry. Early reports indicated that the blaze had spread into nearby woods and drew crews from the Forestry Department.
Firefighters were on the scene approximately three hours.
No injuries were reported.
Route 211 East near Skyline Drive was briefly shut down while firefighters extinguished the flames, but was reopened around midnight.
