~ PVN staff report
LYNCHBURG, Dec. 7 — The Panthers of Page County High School showed well over the weekend while competing in the school’s first-ever indoor track meet on Saturday at Liberty University. Two of the 11 team members posted state-qualifying times, while four members of a relay team barely missed the mark.
Junior Aaron Hensley lead the new program on Saturday in Lynchburg by posting times that qualified him for the state indoor track meet in both the 1600 meters and the 1000 meter races. Henlsey placed 19th among 123 competitors in the 1000 meters, with a time of 2:44.42. In the 1600 meters, the junior placed 23rd among 151 runners, with a time of 4:43.16. Teammate Asher Kite finished 46th in the 1600 meters (4:53.03).
Sophomore Braxton Pettit recorded a state-qualifying time of 8.12 seconds in the 55 meter hurdles, good enough for 12th place among 56 competitors on Saturday. Pettit finished 80th among 265 competitors in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.02 seconds. However, Pettit’s big score of the day was a first place finish in the long jump among 81 entries, with a mark of 19-01.25. Senior Tanner Weaver came in 40th in the long jump, with a mark of 16-08.
Members of the boys 4×800 team missed the state-qualifying time by half a second (9:04.92). The team finished ninth among 17 entries.
Sophomore Nate Holloway finished 25th in the boys shot put among 75 entries, with a mark of 39-03.75.
The brand new program at Page County High School was approved by the Page County School Board this past summer. The team features nine boys and two girls. The Panthers’ next meet will be on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at Fork Union Military Academy.
