Weekly YouTube show dives into various issues, sites and events in the Page Valley

By Randy Arrington

LURAY, Feb. 18 — This week we look back at the life of Bethany Veney in recognition of Black History Month. Born into slavery on Page County’s Pass Run Farm in 1812, Veney would be bought and sold several times, and separated from her daughter and husband, before eventually being given her freedom in Massachusetts. We talk with descendant Del Price and local historian Rod Graves about the life of the Page County native, the narrative published about her life in 1889 (“Aunt Betty’s Story”), and the historical markers that have been erected and special days dedicated to honor her legacy in both Virginia and Massachusetts.

The Historic Andrew Jackson School Committee will be hosting a Black History Month celebration from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Luray VFW Post 621 along Route 211 on the east end of town. The event will provide live music by Bobby G & The Heavies with rhythm and authentic blues, light snacks, local historical information, 50-50 drawing, and opportunities to make memories. Tickets are $25, if purchased by Feb. 20. All proceeds benefit the non-profit committee. For ticket info, call 540-244-0909.

(Page Valley Livin’~Episode 106 was recorded Tuesday, Feb. 17, and aired Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026).

Coming up on Page Valley Livin’… we’ll discuss the end of an era with an emotionally-timed resignation in local law enforcement.

The aim and purpose of these videos is to provide more information about more things that make up the wonderful place we call the Page Valley of Virginia. Serious issues will be handled seriously, while lighter issues may offer more opportunity to have some fun. There is no theme or agenda other than promoting the Page Valley, and trying to better inform the people who both live here and those who love to visit.
