WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Jan. 10 — For this week’s “Athlete of the Week” honor, we go back two weeks and enter the ranks of Division II collegiate women’s basketball…

On Jan. 10, Luray High School alum and all-time leading scorer Emilee Weakley reached 1,000 career points at Frostburg State University faster than any other player in the program’s history.

The Bobcats of FSU lost their road matchup with West Liberty, 84-77, two weeks ago, but Weakly lead all scorers with 33 points and in the first quarter surpassed the 1,000-point milestone for her collegiate career at Frostburg State…just midway through her sophomore season.

The shot that surpassed the milestone came in the form of a three-pointer from Weakley, off an assist from senior MacKenzie Freeze, an alum of nearby Spotswood High School.

During her freshman year, Weakley started all 30 games for the Bobcats and lead all of NCAA Division II in scoring by averaging 25.5 points per game. She reached a high of 47 points in a single game, averaged 10.4 rebounds per game, and broke FSU and Mountain East Conference records by scoring 766 points in a single season.

Last season, Weakley was a four-time MEC Player of the Week, the MEC Freshman of the Year, All-MEC first team, MEC All-Tournament team, All-MEC Academic, Div. II NCAA All-Atlantic Region first team, Honorable Mention All-American, World Exposure Report NCAA DII Freshman of the Year, D2 CCA second team All-American, and even drew a “Go ahead Emilee” from ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt during her debut on “SportsCenter” highlighting the night she hit a buzzer-beater for FSU and broke two school records.

Weakly has scored 326 points through the first 16 games of her sophomore campaign. She put up 40 points on Dec. 9 against Glenville State and recently hit six three-pointers against Salem (W.Va.) on Jan. 20.

By the time she completed her four-year high school career at LHS, Weakley became the all-time leading scorer with 2,606 points and lead the Bulldogs to its first state title in girls basketball. That same season, she was named the VHSL Class 2 “Player of the Year.”

Initially committing to Shepherd University, Weakley followed head coach Jenna Eckleberry in her transition to Frostburg State and turned down Division I offers in order to play for Coach Eckleberry and the Bobcats.
