January 20, 1994 — Snow, sleet, ice and freezing rain followed by a near-record blast of arctic air. That was Page County’s hazardous weather pattern during the past week.

Several sledding accidents prompted warning from Page Memorial Hospital personnel and the Potomac Edison Company asked customers to cut back electricity use. An overnight power outage Tuesday affected the Shenandoah and Grove Hill areas, but electricity was reportedly restored Wednesday.

The winter precipitation came Monday, dumping about two inches of snow in the Page Valley area followed by sleet and icy rain throughout the day. Monday night temperatures fell into the teens, freezing solid melted snow and slush and creating extremely hazardous road conditions.

The thermometer continued to plummet, dropping to 12 below zero in the Alma area, according to weather observer Melvin Miller.
