Weaver propelling Luray through postseason

LURAY, May 29 — Senior Cameron Weaver went a combined 5-for-7 at the plate and recorded three RBI during a pair of one-run, postseason matchups with the Rams of Strasburg over the past week. Weaver also played tough defense behind the plate and even recorded a win on the mound during Monday’s Region 2B quarterfinal.

In the Bull Run District tournament championship at Strasburg on Friday, Weaver went 2-for-4, including a crucial three-RBI double in the decisive sixth inning. With the bases loaded and trailing by two, Weaver belted a blast to left-centerfield that was mishandled, allowing all three base runners to score and giving Luray the game’s final lead at 7-6.

Three days later in the Region 2B semifinal at Bulldog Field — again against the Rams — Weaver went a perfect 3-for-3 with three singles and a walk. After catching six tough innings in the Memorial Day heat, Weaver took the mound in the top of the seventh. The Bulldogs were one pitch away from a 4-2 win when Strasburg got a double that scored two runs and tied the game. Weaver then shut down the Rams in the eighth and picked up the win in two innings of relief, striking out three of the nine batters he faced and allowing no walks.

The big catcher will be a big part of the battle that the Bulldogs ( 12-10) face Wednesday afternoon in a Region 2B semifinal at Buckingham (17-0). The winner advances to the Region 2B tournament championship and a ticket to the Class 2 state tournament.
