August 3, 1962 — Stanley stopped Luray from making a run-way of the Massanutten League on Sunday as Howard Painter, big right-hander, struck out 17 Luray batters to chalk up a 5-2 mound win. Bill Wood, Luray pitcher, hurled a good game, but was the victim of three unearned runs and suffered his first defeat of the season. Wood’s record is 2-1.
Luray scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth as Steve Darnell walked, stole second and came home on Dan Rickard’s pop single to center. Stanley went ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth with three unearned runs. Luray cut that margin to 3-2 in the fifth as they scored an unearned run. Stanley added another run in the fifth as Joe Rinaca doubled off the centerfield fence and scored on Elwood Housden’s single to right.
The winners got their final run in the seventh as Raymond Kite singled, was sacrificed to second by Howard Painter, and scored on another single by Housden.
Painter, aside from striking out 17, allowed a total of 10 hits and walked two. Wood gave up eight hits, fanned eight and walked one. Dan Rickard and Earl Embrey had two hits apiece to pace Luray at bat, while Elwood Housden was the only Stanley batter to get two hits.
