LURAY, Feb. 18 — Luray High School Athletic Director Don Ehlers announced Thursday morning that the LHS girls basketball team will be playing in the 2A state championship at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Gate City Middle School gymnasium.
After defeating King William on Wednesday by a 59-point margin in a state semifinal, the Bulldogs knew they would face either Gate City (Region D champs) or Glenvar (Region C) in the state title game.
Now it’s official — there will be a rematch of the 2020 2A state championship between the Blue Devils and the Bulldogs.
Gate City, the defending 2A champs, will be lead by Division-I prospect and senior point guard Sarah Thompson; while Luray, the state runner-up a year ago, will be lead by first-team All-State selection and junior guard Emilee Weakley.
Gate City sits some 300-plus miles from Luray and will require a nearly five-hour journey for the Bulldogs. COVID protocols put in place by the Virginia High School League will limit Luray to about a dozen fans, who will be able to see the game in-person.
All other fans may see a live stream of the 2A state championship published by VHSL on NFHSNetwork.com Subscriptions to the network are $10.99 per month, which allow access to thousands of athletic events at high schools across the country. (Type in Luray High School in the search bar.)
