September 30, 1965 — The Luray Bulldogs and the Page County Panthers played to a 7-7 tie in the fifth football game in their rivalry last Saturday night at Shenandoah before a crowd of 1,500 fans who watched the defensive struggle in a 38-degree temperature.
Two long runs featured in the scoring for each team.
Page County scored first when Eugene Kiblinger broke off his own left tackle and outran the Luray secondary to the goal line on a run of 80 yards. Doug Burner kicked the extra point to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead.
Luray came right back a short while later in the same period to score a touchdown on a 63-yard run by halfback Tommy Campbell, who also ran for the extra point to tie up the game. Campbell’s touchdown run was identical of Kiblinger’s, in which he found a hole through his left tackle slot.
During the last half, the two teams waged a defensive battle within the 25-yard lines.
Luray’s ground attack was led by Tommy Campbell, Ronnie Hatcher and Steve Campbell. Kiblinger, Buddy Alger and Bobby Wright were the leading ground gainers for Page County.
