Luray’s Legion earns more awards than any other Post in District 15
~ Press release provided by American Legion Post #22
LURAY — At its July meeting, 15th District Commander William Watson for the American Legion’s Department of Virginia, presented to Post #22 three special awards acknowledging the Post’s efforts of being an involved member of the local community and especially providing the care, service and respect to all veterans of Page County.
District Commander Watson spoke to the membership present, especially noting that Post #22 had earned the most awards of all the District 15 posts for the fiscal year ending May 31, 2024.
District Commander Watson then went on to present the three awards earned by Post #22 during that fiscal period. One award was the Yorktown Award. This framed acknowledgement is presented to a District Post having attained at least 80 percent of its current 2024 membership goal as established annually by the Department of Virginia.
The second award was a plaque recognizing the Post’s commitment to its Americanism efforts. Americanism is the Legion’s Third Pillar of service representing its dedication to God and country, with a membership of military veterans who take deep pride in the U.S. flag and all that it means. Since its inception more than 100 years ago, the Legion has been a stalwart champion of patriotic values, morals, culture and citizenship. The Legion’s pillar of Americanism embodies its devotion to law and order, the raising of wholesome youth, an educated and law-abiding citizenship, and respectful observance of patriotic holidays and remembrances.
The third award presented by District Commander Watson was a plaque recognizing Post #22’s accomplishments through its Veterans Service Program, a part of the Legion’s First Pillar of service, that being Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation. This award recognizes the Post’s commitment to assisting our local veterans in obtaining V.A. benefits they have earned through their individual service to our nation.
Such benefits include assisting individual veterans with gaining access to V.A. health care, usually through a network of Legion Service Officers. The Post also addresses veterans special needs, ensuring that all veterans receive the special care due each because of injury sustained during active-duty service. This Pillar of the Legion addresses veteran homelessness by contacting local specialist providers to assist the homeless veteran, and when the time comes, Post #22 provides each veteran with his or her Honor Guard final respect.
American Legion membership is open to any veteran honorably discharged from U.S. Military Service. To join Miller-Campbell-Baker Post #22, or to receive information about becoming a member, interested veterans should contact our membership chairman at 540-860-1945, or any Post #22 member.
If you enjoy being active in our community, supporting fellow veterans, possess any special skills or have any unique interests in helping your military brothers and sisters, the officers at Post #22 would like to speak with you. Please contact one of us at the above number or call 540-843-2565.
