October 21, 1965 — The cash drawer at one of the checking stations at the Luray A&P Store was looted during business hours Thursday evening of last week.
Four Washington, D.C., men have been apprehended and charged with the theft. The amount of money taken was not divulged by the store’s management.
Palmer Moyer, local A&P manager, said that Preston Richards, the checker at the particular station, had left the station for a short time about 5:30 p.m. during a lull in business. It was when he returned to the counter and started using the cash register again that the theft was discovered.
Two other checking stations were in operation at the store during the time Richards was away from this station, Moyer said.
The thieves made the haul quickly and were undetected by the other clerks and customers.
