Age 55, Luray, Va.
Barton Robert “Bart” Smith, of Luray, passed away on Thursday, May 26, at the age of 55. He was born on June 9, 1966, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and was the son of Bobby and the late Jane Smith.
Bart enlisted in the United States Marine Corps upon his graduation from Luray High School in 1984. Being stationed in various places both domestically and abroad, he was able to travel and see new parts of the world during his time with the Marines, which ignited his desire for continuous adventure.
Bart was skilled in many trades
and often served as a leader on job sites. He spent much of his free time hunting, fishing, and canoeing. His love for the outdoors brought out the happy, free-spirit that defined him. Happiness to Bart was a sunny day on the river with a fishing rod and a cold drink in his hand. From working as a hunting guide in Colorado, to a commercial roofer in Alaska, to learning how to be a rodeo cowboy at Camp LeJune, Bart packed a lot of memorable experiences into his 55 years and was always up for a challenge.
Bart is survived by his daughter, Kaitlyn
Smith, of Dallas, Texas; father, Bobby Smith of Luray; sister, Barbie Stombock of Luray; and nieces Shannon and Cara Stombock of Richmond. He also leaves behind countless close friends who will also miss his quick wit, storytelling, and infectious laugh.
When you think of Bart, celebrate the good memories you have of him and remember that life is short, fragile, and should be lived to the fullest.
If you would like to honor Bart’s memory, consider donating to Friends of the Shenandoah River or the American Civil War Museum.
