Beginnings of Luray’s Ralph Dean Park

January 18, 1990It looks like Luray’s new park project off Sixth Street could become a reality as early as spring 1991, according to Town Manager Ronald Good.

On Friday, the state’s Outdoor Recreation Advisory Board gave preliminary approval to a $200,000 matching grant which has been holding up work on the site since it was purchased in August 1988.

“They approved our request for the grant, based on the availability of funds,” Good said Tuesday. “It still has to go through a couple more steps, but once the advisory board accepts it, it’s pretty well sure it will be approved.”

The first phase of the park work includes all site work, a parking lot for 62 vehicles, a Little League baseball field, a combination softball/football field, a multi-purpose field and a 1,300-square-foot concession building with restrooms and storage space.

“I don’t think we’ve broken it down,” Good said of future plans. “I don’t think we’ve decided what’s Phase 2 and what’s Phase 3.”
