LURAY — More than a half dozen musical acts will pay tribute to a country music legend this Saturday afternoon in Page County — including his son — in a special birthday event that includes food, a car show and the legendary “Daisy Duke.”
Recording artist Whey Jennings will lead a lineup of musicians performing at Cooter’s Place just west of Luray to salute his father, Waylon Jennings. In 2017, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Waylon No. 7 among the all-time greatest country artists.
The music legend earned numerous awards in the 1970s, including the Country Music Association’s “Male Vocalist of the Year” in 1975. The next year he would be part of both the “Album of the Year” and “Single of the Year” honors from the CMA as part of a new group of “outlaws” that took over country music in the mid-70s with songs like “Good-Hearted Woman.”
Waylon Jennings was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
This Saturday, Aug. 27, Waylon’s son Whey Jennings will return to Luray, Virginia for a special tribute concert.

While music will be a big part of the festivities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Cooter’s Place along Route 211 just west of Luray… the real reason for the event is to celebrate the 81st birthday of owner Ben Jones, who portrayed “Cooter Davenport” — ace mechanic and good friend to the Duke boys — on the 1980s CBS show the “Dukes of Hazzard.”
Thus the official name of Saturday’s event —
“Ben’s 81st Birthday Bash” — pretty much to the point, just like Ben.
The “birthday boy” will be on hand to sign autographs, as well as perform on stage with Cooter’s Garage Band. Also offering autographs and a few songs will be Catherine Bach, who portrayed the world-famous “Daisy Duke” on the show. A meet and greet will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The day also includes “Cooter’s Car Show” presented by the Shenandoah Valley Mustang Club of Winchester, Va. No preregistration is necessary and spectators are free. Register at the gate day of the show for $20 per vehicle from 9 a.m. to noon. All vehicles will enter at the side road in the back. Follow signs at the venue. Awards will be presented for Top 20 vehicles up to 1999, Top 20 vehicles 2000 to present, and Best in Show. Awards based on participant ballots.
Drawings will be held for door prizes on Saturday, and a 50/50 raffle will be held to win Cooter’s birthday cake. Food and drinks will be available at Rudy’s Roadside (formerly Daisy’s Dairy Barn). Free admission all day to the “Dukes of Hazzard” museum to see the General Lee, Boss Hogg’s Caddy and more, all sitting in a garage modeled after the television show’s set.
