~ Press release provided by the Stanley Volunteer Fire Department
STANLEY, Nov. 4 — Fire Chief Terry A. Pettit reported that the Stanley Fire Department was called for a house fire at 4990 Mill Creek Road about three miles North of Stanley on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. The $300,000 home was a total loss, and two family pets perished in the blaze.
Chief Pettit stated that when firefighters arrived, the side and rear porch was on fire and quickly spreading into the house. He also said that the fire started in an area of the outside porches, but the exact cause of the fire is unknown and currently still under investigation.
Jacob Taylor and his wife Amber lived at the residence, along with their four children — ages 14, 11, 8 and 4. The Taylors were not home at the time, but two cats did die in the fire. The home is owned by Dean and Karen Hoppe and is insured. The Red Cross is assisting the family.
It took about an hour to bring the fire under control, according to Pettit. Firefighters remained on the scene for three hours to make sure the fire was extinguished. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Pettit said five units and 18 firefighters from the Stanley Fire Department responded to the call.
The department was assisted by tankers from the Luray Fire Department and the Shenandoah Fire Department had an engine stand by the Stanley station in case of other calls.
The Page County EMS also responded with one unit and crew. The Page County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control. Mill Creek Road was closed for about three hours.
